A hard look at a hard concept: gay marriage
This week’s Weekly Standard features a compelling essay by Sam Schulman on a difficult subject - gay marriage. It’s worth a read, since it takes a hard look at what bothers most grown-ups (say over 30) about the subject - and for starters that does not include Biblical literalism or hatred of gays. The problem is, as usual, the unintended consequences of changing the definition of marriage away from exclusive unions between one man and one woman. Shulman talks about the concept of “kinship,” the foundation for the idea of family connections that got its start in prehistoric times. Gay marriage is all about romantic love and self-fulfillment - maybe that’s why the idea gained ground in recent decades. Kinship is a much more difficult concept, rooted in not-so-pretty rules and relationships that have made civilization tick for millennia.
