Bob Dold and Jan Schakowsky join forces to change Winnetka - is this Federal interference the end of local decision-making?
With Winnetka in the midst of a controversial campaign aimed at creating a new “diverse” look to housing in the village - dictated by liberal outside community organizers - it disappointed many residents to learn that Rep. Robert Dold found common cause with the most liberal representative in the country – and signed up with her side in this local battle. Outgoing 10th District Cong. Robert Dold has joined with his newly-redistricted replacement, Jan Schakowsky, to award $235,874 in grant money from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs. According to publicity from the IHCNS, the funds will be used to enforce the federal Fair Housing Act, promoting diverse, integrated and non-discriminatory communities, and counseling homeowners facing foreclosure and mortgage rescue scams.
Assessing the grant, longtime Wilmette activist for affordable housing and IHCNS Executive Director Gail Schechter commented, “One person’s nefarious manipulation is another’s sound public policy. In short, we interfere with the market to promote a concept of the common good.”
“This record amount of funding into Chicago’s northern suburbs represents a strong statement from the federal government that every individual and family must be treated equally in our housing market,” Schechter continued. “Now we have the resources to fully enforce the Fair Housing Act, educate consumers, municipalities and the real estate community, and bring about welcoming and diverse suburbs. We are also enormously pleased that homeowners in danger of foreclosure can turn to the Interfaith Housing Center for help. We owe enormous thanks to Congressman Bob Dold for his support of fair housing and the work of the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs.”
Dold’s press release says in part that he congratulates the Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs for being awarded these grants and for Gail Schechter’s leadership at this organization.
Good luck to Dold with his current fundraising efforts in Winnetka. There is next to no chance that the Illinois state GOP lawsuit to overturn the Democrat redistricting plan (which extends Schakowsky’s 9th district from Chicago north through Winnetka) will succeed. Looks like Dold has just written Winnetka residents off.
