Schoenberg Shows His Dem Clout in Northfield Dispute

Well isn’t it nice for his constituents to see the REAL Jeff Schoenberg in action? Now that his Democrat cronies have all the power in Springfield, State Senator Jeffie (9th,D) doesn’t have any need to coddle his State Senate district with crumbs of representation - this week he stomped on a compromise that Northfield Village President John Birkenbine has been negotiating for several years and slammed a couple of extra lanes (with a cost of $4 million to state taxpayers) along Willow Road. So much for the hard work of one of the few remaining politicians with integrity (Birkinbine, that is). Northfield elementary school children who need to cross Willow to get to school now will get a tunnel; let’s hope there won’t be any undesirable pols skulking in the gloom down there.

Whatever the Birkenbine compromise might have entailed, the bottom line in this power grab is that the developers of shopping centers in Glenview, Northbrook and beyond need to move traffic quickly through Northfield and out to their strip malls and mega centers. Time was, Jeff Schoenberg used to get permission from the Democrat leadership in Springfield to vote ”yes” on popular North Shore issues such as caps on property taxes. That got him elected and re-elected. Not much argument that things have changed for the worse.

This November, local voters ought to take a look at Schoenberg’s ultra-liberal record and his Daley/Blagojevichesque pay-to-play tactics. Brendan Appel is a young and energetic Glenview attorney with - guess what - integrity and the know-how to take on the Illinois Combine, even from a minority position. Appel has an uphill battle in November, so the troops had better wake up and support him.
